Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel announces his retirement from international football at the age of 35.

Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel has announced his retirement from international football.

The news comes after a disastrous Euro 2012 campaign which saw the Oranje fail to notch up a single point in Group B.

"I don't want to retire," the 35-year-old midfielder told the Dutch FA's official website. "Maybe there will a moment that the coach needs me in the future and then I will be available but for now it is time for talented young players."

Van Bommel has made 79 appearances and scored 10 goals for his country since he made his debut in 2000.
