Manchester United defender Phil Jones is reportedly going to stay at Old Trafford for this season, as he closes in on his recovery from a knee injury.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is reportedly still in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans for this season.

The injury-hit centre-back has not featured for the Red Devils since January 2020 as a long-term knee injury ruled him out of the entire 2020-21 campaign.

It is likely that opportunities for Jones to start in central defence will be limited after the club signed Raphael Varane, however the Englishman still has a contract at Old Trafford running until 2023.

ESPN reports that Solskjaer believes the 29-year-old deserves the chance to regain match fitness and form, and he is closing in on a return to the pitch, which he is expected to be able to do within the next month.

Jones joined Man United in 2011 in a deal worth £16.5m from Blackburn Rovers, and Solskjaer is said to want to reward the defender for his longevity to the club.

During his time with Man United, Jones has won six trophies including a Premier League title and a Europa League triumph.
