Newcastle United are prioritising Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier as their number one target in the upcoming January transfer market, according to a report.
The Magpies are currently 18th in the Premier League table after winning just one game so far, with three points separating them and Watford, who are just outside the relegation zone.
Defensively the team have struggled this season, with no club having conceded more goals than Eddie Howe's squad (34), which is why they have been linked with several defenders since the takeover.
One of those men is England international Trippier, and Newcastle are set to make him their number one priority in January, according to the Daily Mail.
The 31-year-old is out of contract with Atletico Madrid at the end of the season, but if he starts 20 games it is believed that he will automatically trigger the option of another year.
The full-back is open to a return to the Premier League, and he was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer, but the deal never materialised as the Spanish outfit wanted over £25m.
Newcastle United will be back in action on Thursday night when they travel to face Liverpool, hoping to rebound from their recent 4-0 loss against Leicester City.
