Manchester United move closer to a £17m deal for Benfica's 26-year-old centre-back Ezequiel Garay.

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay for £17m.

The defender would become the first major signing of the David Moyes era at Old Trafford and would provide competition for 34-year-old Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who has made just 25 league appearances in the last two seasons.

The Mirror reports that the defender will finalise a move to Manchester after playing in Argentina's match against Columbia on Friday evening.

The 26-year-old moved to Benfica from Real Madrid in 2011 and has 13 caps for Argentina.
