A new frontrunner reportedly emerges in the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion forward Evan Ferguson before the February 3 deadline.

Brighton & Hove Albion forward Evan Ferguson reportedly has a new frontrunner in the race for his signature.

Despite being regarded as one of the best young strikers in Europe, the 20-year-old has struggled to make an impression during 2024-25.

The Republic of Ireland international has been provided with just two starts and 10 substitute outings in the Premier League, scoring one goal.

Although Fabian Hurzeler had previously insisted that Ferguson would have to remain patient for chances at the Amex Stadium, it appears increasingly likely that he will be allowed to depart on loan.

Earlier this week, West Ham United were alleged to be a potential destination for the player and that will remain the case until there are any conclusive developments.

Who is leading Ferguson race?

Nevertheless, as per Sky Sports News, Bayer Leverkusen have moved to the front of the queue for Ferguson's signature.

The report suggests that contact has already been initiated with their Brighton counterparts in the hope of negotiating a deal.

Leverkusen have been put into a position where they are forced to act in the transfer market courtesy of the likelihood of parting ways with Victor Boniface.

Xabi Alonso has already acknowledged that the 24-year-old is currently not in contention to play again for Leverkusen, backing up reports that the Nigeria international has been targeted by Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

If financial terms can be agreed with the club and player, Boniface is in line to depart Leverkusen having contributed seven goals and one assist in Bundesliga and Champions League fixtures.

With Martin Terrier also sidelined in the long term through injury, reinforcements are in the offing with Aston Villa's Emiliano Buendia in line to move to Leverkusen on loan.

Will there be late competition?

Despite his lack of game time, Ferguson continues to have widespread admirers around Europe and more proposals could be presented for his services.

Arsenal and Manchester United are other Premier League sides to be credited with an interest and who may look to add to their options down the middle of their respective attacks.

From Ferguson's perspective, first-team football is a priority, yet linking up with a progressive club such as Leverkusen may prove too hard to turn down.
