Crystal Palace reportedly reject what is described as a 'major' offer from a Premier League club for defender Marc Guehi.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly failed with what is described as a 'major' bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Earlier on Monday, it was widely claimed that Spurs had withdrawn their interest in signing versatile Chelsea man Axel Disasi.

However, Spurs remain in the hunt for a new central defender despite having won the race to sign Kevin Danso from Lens over the weekend.

Spurs also kept a rare clean sheet in a 2-0 victory at Brentford on Sunday afternoon, yet a replacement is required for Radu Dragusin who may be sidelined in the long term with a knee injury.

Nevertheless, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, they will not be getting a deal for Guehi over the line before close of business on Monday.

Palace stand firm over Guehi

Ornstein says that Palace have decided to reject a significant bid for the England international, despite his current contract situation.

Guehi has less than 18 months remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park at a time when a number of high-profile Premier League clubs have been circling for his signature.

Chelsea had been keen on their former academy graduate earlier in January before they instead opted to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan stint with the Eagles.

Liverpool and Manchester United are also believed to hold a long-standing interest in acquiring the services of the 24-year-old.

The report adds that many of the aforementioned clubs may return for Guehi in the summer, the assumption being that he will not pen fresh terms with the London outfit before then.

Why are Palace against Guehi sale?

Although the size of Spurs' bid has not been disclosed, the assumption is that it would have been at least £50m given that Palace have rejected the advances of Newcastle United in the past when a minimum £65m was on the table.

The departure of Chalobah and recent injury sustained by Chadi Riad have left Oliver Glasner short of options for his favoured back three.

Palace also want to ensure that they do not get dragged into a relegation battle, despite Sunday's win at Manchester United moving the club 13 points clear of the bottom three.

Reports have indicated that Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell is currently the most likely incoming on deadline day, while they are also attempting to sign AC Milan centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic.
