Manchester United will have to pay Edinson Cavani £2m if the striker does not sign a 12-month contract extension, according to a report.

Manchester United will reportedly have to pay Edinson Cavani £2m if the Uruguay international does not sign a 12-month contract extension at Old Trafford.

The 34-year-old joined the Red Devils on a free transfer last summer and has scored seven times in 28 appearances for the English giants during the 2020-21 campaign.

As it stands, the forward's contract is due to expire at the end of June, but there is the option of a 12-month extension, taking him through to the end of next season.

Cavani is thought to be keen to move to Boca Juniors this year, with the Argentine outfit said to be exploring the possibility of signing him on a free transfer.

According to The Mirror, if Man United fail to trigger the extension then the South American will be entitled to a £2m payoff under the terms of the agreement.

The report claims that both parties must agree to the 12-month deal, meaning that Cavani could decide to walk away and still receive the sum.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored six times and provided two assists in 19 Premier League appearances this season.
