Wayne Rooney: 'Barcelona as good as ever'

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney insists that Barcelona are now thriving under a different style of play introduced by Luis Enrique.

Wayne Rooney has claimed that Barcelona are currently at their very best level following last year's treble success.

The Catalan giants reigned supreme both at home and abroad in Luis Enrique's first term at the helm last time out.

Pep Guardiola's years in charge between 2008 and 2012 are widely considered to be the finest in the club's history, but Manchester United striker Rooney believes that the class of 2014-15 are at least on a par.

"Barcelona are a fantastic team," he told ESPN. "After Real Madrid winning the Champions League [in 2014], [Barca] wouldn't have liked that and they've come out again and been incredible really.

"I believe they've probably been as good as they ever have been over the last 10 years. It's a different way of playing [under Luis Enrique]. They're defending a little bit deeper and not going and closing down teams the way they did and they're hurting teams on the counter-attack.

"You can see there's a change in the way they play but, with the players they have got, obviously [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis] Suarez, they are a massive threat to anyone."

Rooney's Man United side take on Barcelona in a pre-season friendly this weekend.
