England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate has claimed that Manchester United is the right place for James Wilson to develop.
The 19-year-old scored in the U21s' 1-0 victory over a USA Under-23 side on Thursday night.
Wilson is in danger of losing out on game time at Old Trafford this season following the £36m signing of Anthony Martial on transfer deadline day earlier this week.
There were rumblings that the young striker would be sent out on loan, but a move failed to materialise before the close of the window on Tuesday.
"I believe United will handle his development in the best way," Sky Sports News quotes Southgate as saying. "They are one of the best clubs in the world. Look at their history for developing young players.
"There is still some physical development to come. As he plays more matches he will get hardened. It is very early stages of us working with him. We've seen him play for United. He hasn't got enormous game time under his belt. We might have to be patient and wait for him."
Wilson made his senior debut last year.
