Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's goals vs. Liverpool

Ahead of Cardiff City's match with Liverpool, Sports Mole looks back on the three goals that their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored against the Reds.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will face Liverpool for the first time as a manager this afternoon when his Cardiff City side play host to the Premier League titles chasers in Wales.

As a player, the Norwegian featured against the Merseysiders on 11 occasions during his time with Manchester United.

The 41-year-old scored three times in those encounters and below Sports Mole has looked back on each of them.

1. Man United 2-1 Liverpool, 1999
It appeared for a long while that Michael Owen's third-minute header would be enough to send Liverpool into the fifth round of that season's FA Cup. However, just as United were to do so on many occasions during the historic treble-winning season, they left it late. Dwight Yorke scored two minutes from time from close range, but just when it appeared that a replay at Anfield was inevitable, Solskjaer intervened in stoppage time.

Paul Scholes struggled to fully control Jaap Stam's lofted pass inside the area, but when the ball broke for substitute Solskjaer, he wrong-footed visiting goalkeeper David James with a low strike inside the near post.

Speaking recently about that goal, Solskjaer said: "That was my only touches of the ball. When you get moments like that, scoring in stoppage time, you feel that this might be your year."

2. Man United 1-1 Liverpool, 2000
Solskjaer then haunted Liverpool the very next time that he faced them, although the circumstances were nowhere near as dramatic. Czech midfielder Patrik Berger had put the away side in front with 27 minutes played with a powerful shot from distance that beat United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw.

With the break fast approaching, Solskjaer equalised. Ryan Giggs was the creator, crossing from the left for his teammate, who reacted quickest to get in front of two Liverpool defenders. Then, with just Sander Westerveld to beat, he curled the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

3. Man United 4-0 Liverpool, 2003
A brace of penalties from Ruud van Nistelrooy and Giggs's first Premier League goal at Old Trafford in two years had long sealed the three points for United at the expense of their bitterest rivals, but there was still enough time for Solskjaer to add a fourth goal in the closing stages.

Having inherited possession from Giggs, Solskjaer sidestepped Djimi Traore 12 yards from goal and, despite an unfavourable angle, the centre-forward struck an effort beyond the reach of a static and unsighted Jerzy Dudek.
