Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has claimed that Paul Pogba "was playing for himself" for the majority of 2018.

Pogba has been in outstanding form for United since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins in December, with the Frenchman playing a key role in his team winning eight of their last nine matches in all competitions.

The midfielder's form under Jose Mourinho was incredibly inconsistent, though, amid suggestions that there had been a falling-out between the two individuals.

Scholes has said that he "hated" criticising Pogba's performances under Mourinho, but the 44-year-old was frustrated because he knew just how good the World Cup winner could be for the club.

"I think it's just down to the player. I've been one of his biggest critics and I hated doing it, but the reason I was doing it is because I've played alongside the lad," the Manchester Evening News quotes Scholes as saying.

"I've seen over the years what a talent this player is. For the first part of this season and probably last year he was playing for himself. I think he lost total respect for the manager, which I don't agree with totally.

"Now he's playing with his brain and he's using the quality he has. You've seen the last eight to 10 games what a player he is and what a player he can be."

Pogba, who re-joined United from Juventus in the summer of 2016, has scored 11 times and registered eight assists in 28 appearances for the Red Devils this term.
