Peter Schmeichel: 'Ryan Giggs should leave Manchester United'

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel says that Ryan Giggs should take the opportunity to prove himself away from Old Trafford.

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has said that Ryan Giggs will only become a future manager of the club if he proves himself away from Old Trafford.

Giggs has previously been touted as a future United boss, but his future in the North-West is unclear with Jose Mourinho reportedly in line to replace Louis van Gaal after the English giants only finished in fifth position in the Premier League.

The Welshman is allegedly contemplating his next move but Schmeichel feels that his former teammate - who has spent three years on the backroom staff at United - should try to secure himself a managerial role elsewhere for next season.

The 52-year-old told Sky Sports News: "I think Ryan's dream is to one day manage Manchester United and I think to be equipped for that he has to go away and manage another club, standing on his own two feet and making his own decisions.

"He needs to produce his own results and use his own ideas and for him, it would be a good idea to go somewhere else."

Giggs spent his entire playing career at Manchester United, making 963 appearances in all competitions.
