Report: Wayne Rooney targets Manchester derby return

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is targeting the derby against Manchester City on September 22 as the match in which to make his return from a head injury.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is apparently targeting the Manchester derby on September 22 as the match in which to make his comeback from his head injury.

The 27-year-old missed United's Premier League clash with Liverpool, and then dropped out of the England squad due to a severe gash suffered during a training-ground collision with Phil Jones.

On September 1, he required 10 stitches and was originally ruled out for around three weeks, meaning that he would be in a race against time to return for the clash against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Rooney is due to resume light training when his teammates come back from international duty later this week, and Red Devils boss David Moyes will monitor his fitness, according to The Mirror.

The same source reports that Moyes will consider Rooney for selection if he is able to head a ball, and is fit enough to feature following a 10-day spell away from training.
