Michael Owen backs David Moyes for success at Manchester United

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen backs David Moyes to continue the club's success in the Premier League.

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen feels that David Moyes will prove to be a success as manager of the club.

Moyes began life as United manager in the Premier League with a 4-1 win against Swansea City, and Owen feels that the Scot will continue where Alex Ferguson left off at Old Trafford.

"I have no doubt David is the right man for United but it is a tough challenge following Sir Alex," Owen wrote in his column in The Telegraph.

"In many ways, it is a no-win situation, like when Sammy Lee took over at Bolton after Sam Allardyce left or even now at Everton for Roberto Martinez succeeding David. You simply cannot do better than the man before you.

"If David loses one of the first games, which is entirely possible with [games against] Chelsea and Liverpool, the scrutiny will be intense. The whole world has got its eyes fixed on Manchester United and David Moyes. It might take a bit of time for David to get his style going at Old Trafford and Carrington, but he will. He will do well in the long term."

Owen played for the Red Devils from 2009 to 2011.
