Michael Owen disappointed by Magpie boos

Michael Owen complains on Twitter about the hostile reaction he received at St James’s Park.

Michael Owen has revealed that he was 'disappointed' by his reception at St James’s Park last night.

The striker was brought on to replace Nani in the closing stages of Manchester United’s goalless meeting with his former team Newcastle United. Owen transferred from Newcastle in 2009 after a four-year stint. Leaving shortly after the team’s relegation to the Champtionship after a period blighted by personal injury has left him unpopular with some fans.

"From a personal point of view it was nice to get on. Got a poor reception off the home fans which was disappointing. Was desperate to score!" he said on Twitter. "Knew I would get booed as that's what a lot of fans do but if they knew the facts then they may have a different opinion."

Drawing negative tweets in response, he added: "From what most of you Newcastle fans are saying you should be pleased I left the club! If i had known that earlier I could have left sooner! For the record, I tried my best in every game for Newcastle. Under KK I played well and i'll never forget the 2 I scored against Sunderland.”
