Rene Meulensteen: 'Manchester United are missing freedom on the pitch'

Rene Meulensteen says that Manchester United lack a sense of "freedom" ahead of tonight's crucial Champions League match against Wolfsburg.

Former Manchester United assistant boss Rene Meulensteen has claimed that the current team are missing a sense of "freedom" on the pitch.

Manager Louis van Gaal has been criticised for his team's lack of attacking flair in recent weeks.

The Red Devils, who have scored just one goal in their last three matches, need to beat Wolfsburg in Germany this evening to be certain of their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

"I still think overall over the last few weeks, when I've seen Manchester United play, there's still plenty of quality there without a doubt," Meulensteen told BBC Radio 5 live. "I just miss some sort of freedom at times in the attacking third.

"They have to take their chances tonight. I don't think it's going to be a very open game from the start but United will get the chances and if they do they need to take them."

United have scored five goals in their five Group B matches.
