Man United's Juan Mata, Chelsea's Fernando Torres not included in Spain squad

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres are not included in Spain's squad to face Italy.

Manchester United's club-record signing Juan Mata has not been included in Spain's squad for their friendly against Italy on March 5.

The midfielder admitted that part of his reason for moving to Old Trafford from Chelsea in January was to gain more playing time in order to secure a World Cup place this summer.

However, Mata has not made it into manager Vicente del Bosque's squad, while Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has also been dealt a blow by also being left out of the setup.

Striker Diego Costa has been handed a place due to his scintillating form for Atletico Madrid this season, while Manchester City's Alvaro Negredo also gets a spot in the squad.

Spain squad to face Italy:

Goalkeepers: Victor Valdes (Barcelona), Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli)

Defenders: Juanfran (Atletico), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Albiol (Napoli)

Midfielders: Busquets (Barcelona), Javi Martinez (Bayern), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona), Koke (Atletico), Thiago (Bayern), Jesus Navas (Manchester City), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)

Forwards: Alvaro Negredo (Manchester City), Diego Costa (Atletico), Pedro (Barcelona)
