Dermot Gallagher: 'Referee right not to send off Manchester United's Paul Pogba'

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that the referee was right not to hand two yellow cards to Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba against Burnley.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has said that the referee was right not to send off Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba in Saturday's fixture with Burnley.

A second-half goal from Anthony Martial earned a 1-0 victory for Jose Mourinho's side, but Burnley boss Sean Dyche questioned why Pogba had not been given a red card.

Dyche claimed that the French international committed two bookable offences before eventually receiving a yellow card, but Gallagher has played down the manager's suggestions and backed the referee's decisions, the first of which could have been for kicking the ball away.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "I do not think that is as clear cut as you see as when you see it the Burnley player is also going to kick the ball. So when the whistle has gone, both of them go to kick the ball and Pogba gets there first and kicks it away. So it was not one that was blatantly kicked away with intent or dissent.

"The second one, I think that is where the referee [Mike Dean] has been really good. It is a foul, but what he has done is said, 'I have spoken to you there and have already given you a warning.' So that is proactive and really good refereeing."

The defeat left the Clarets sitting in eighth place in the Premier League standings.
