Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has set Wayne Rooney a target of 40 goals for the season following Sunday's 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Rooney's brace took his tally for the season to 26 as United moved above rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

"Wayne is on a hot streak," said Ferguson. "I thought his first goal might have been offside because he was so clear but when you see his timing of the run it was fantastic.

"If Wayne gets to 40 goals I will be absolutely delighted because we will be in business then."

The Red Devils will be hoping that Rooney is on target when they travel to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday looking to overturn a 3-2 deficit in their Europa League last-16 tie.
