Sir Alex Ferguson hopes that Queens Park Rangers can defy all the odds and get a result against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that it will take something "stupid" to happen for the Red Devils to clinch the Premier League title this season.

United are likely to relinquish their hold on the league trophy this weekend as their arch rivals Manchester City have an eight-goal advantage, while possessing same points as their competitors.

Roberto Mancini's side will take on Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium while the red half of Manchester go head to head with Sunderland in the North East on Sunday.

"We can only do our best and try to win the match and hope something stupid happens with City," said Ferguson.

"Exactly 29 years ago today, I took Aberdeen to beat Real Madrid in a European final, with 11 home-grown players. That's QPR's challenge - to do an Aberdeen. The odds are stacked against them, City are in tremendous form. But as long as human beings are human beings you never know."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has confirmed that Chris Smalling will miss the European Championships with England this summer due to a groin injury.
