Sir Alex Ferguson hails "fantastic" Ryan Giggs

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson heaps praise on Ryan Giggs following the winger's decision to retire from football.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on Ryan Giggs after the winger announced his retirement from football earlier today.

Ferguson signed Giggs for United on the Welshman's 17th birthday in 1990 and went on to enjoy a lengthy and trophy-laden spell with him in the team.

The 40-year-old retires as the most decorated player in English football history having won 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues under Ferguson's tutelage, and the Scot was quick to pay tribute to the club legend.

"What a fantastic career - the number of games you have played, the trophies you have won, the help you have given young people and the help you have given me and all the coaching staff," Ferguson said in a video message on United's official website.

In all, Giggs made 963 appearances for United, scoring 168 goals.
