How Manchester United could line up against Man City

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up for Wednesday's EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

High-flying Manchester United will look to continue their fine domestic form in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night when they host Manchester City in a derby semi-final at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have taken 26 of the last 30 points on offer in the Premier League in addition to sweeping their way into the last four of this competition without conceding a single goal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has a first major trophy as a manager in his sights, but his side come up against a team that has utterly dominated this competition in recent years.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the five-time League Cup winners could line up for the semi-final.

Solskjaer could choose to name as close to a full-strength side as possible for this match given the magnitude of the contest, both in terms of the opponent and the stage of the competition.

Saturday's FA Cup tie at home to Watford looks like a better opportunity to rest players and, given that United have had two days more rest than their opponents, Solskjaer may look to take full advantage of that.

The hosts' options are slightly limited with Edinson Cavani suspended as he serves the second in a three-match ban for an offensive social media post, while Victor Lindelof remains a slight doubt after missing the last two games with a back injury.

Eric Bailly has enjoyed something of a revival in the first team and could keep his place, although there will be a change behind him with Dean Henderson having played every minute of EFL Cup football this season, keeping clean sheets in all three such games.

A first-choice XI nowadays for Man United appears to include Paul Pogba after he worked his way back into Solskjaer's thinking, although that could be bad news for others who might usually be hopeful of starting in the EFL Cup.

Donny van de Beek and Juan Mata are among those fringe players who could miss out, while Solskjaer must also decide whether to recall the likes of Alex Telles and Mason Greenwood.

The Red Devils have shared their goals around in the EFL Cup this season with their eight strikes coming from seven different players, Mata being the only one to have scored twice among those.
