Louis van Gaal upbeat over Wayne Rooney injury

Louis van Gaal is confident that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's knee injury is not too bad as he prepares for a full diagnosis.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that Wayne Rooney will undergo a scan on Wednesday to determine the severity of his knee injury.

The 29-year-old was forced to watch tonight's 2-1 home win over Stoke City from the stands after colliding with an advertising hoarding in Saturday's victory over Hull City.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal is hopeful that his skipper will not be sidelined for a lengthy period of time.

"It's his knee but we have to wait to say anything about him because you never know with a knee," the Dutchman told reporters.

"My opinion is it's not so serious but I'm not a doctor. We have to wait for the scan on Wednesday, then we'll know more. I hope it's not so serious."

Steven N'zonzi cancelled out Marouane Fellaini's opener as both sides went into the break level at Old Trafford, but Juan Mata struck a winner on 59 minutes to secure United's fourth successive win.
