Half-Time Report: Kyle Walker own goal gives Manchester United lead

An own goal from Kyle Walker puts Manchester United 1-0 ahead against Tottenham Hotspur in the first match of the new Premier League season.

An own goal from Kyle Walker has given Manchester United a 1-0 lead over Tottenham Hotspur in the opening match of the new Premier League season at Old Trafford.

The first chance of the match fell to the visitors as Harry Kane teed the ball up for Christian Eriksen, who controlled it with his head before getting a shot away, but the ball ended up on the roof of the net.

Kane was involved again a few minutes later as he saw his shot deflected behind for a corner, having fought past Luke Shaw a couple of moments earlier.

Louis van Gaal's side started to see more of the ball as the first half progressed though, and opened the scoring midway through the half when Wayne Rooney was clear through on goal with Walker attempting to rescue the situation, only to turn the ball into his own net.

Juan Mata attempted to double the home side's advantage when he lined up a free kick from just outside the box, failing to clear the wall, only to come closer a few minutes later with a left-footed drilled effort which finished just wide.

Walker's slip-up marks the first time in the Premier League's 23-year history that the opening goal of the season has been an own goal.
