Liverpool, Manchester United fined by UEFA for 'illicit chanting'

Liverpool and Manchester United are fined by UEFA for 'illicit chanting' and other incidents during their Europa League last-16 tie.

UEFA has fined Liverpool and Manchester United for illicit chanting and crowd disturbances during their Europa League last-16 tie in March.

The long-standing rivals have both been hit with €40,000 (£30,577) fines for illicit chants, while Liverpool have been given an additional €17,000 (£12,995) and United an extra €18,000 (£13,760) for other incidents.

The incidents, which relate to the March 10 leg at Anfield and the Old Trafford clash six days later, also include the throwing of objects.

Liverpool were also charged with setting off fireworks and having a late kickoff, while United were charged with blocking stairways.

Half of the larger fines imposed on both clubs have been suspended for two years, and Liverpool have been ordered to contact their North-West rivals within 30 days to agree a settlement of damages caused by their supporters.

The Merseyside outfit ended up beating United in the last-16 tie and eventually progressed to the final in Basel, where they lost 3-1 to Sevilla.
