Wayne Rooney is facing a race against time to be fit for England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.

Fabio Capello could be without the services of Wayne Rooney for England's crucial Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro next month.

The striker missed Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Stoke City at the weekend because of a hamstring strain.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has also ruled the 25-year-old out of tomorrow's Champions League clash with FC Basel, meaning that there is just one Premier League fixture remaining before the England squad travel to Podgorica.

"It's difficult to assess on hamstring injuries," Ferguson told a press conference.

"We hope to have him back quickly. He has done a bit of jogging but that's all."

England need a point from their fixture with Montenegro to ensure automatic progression to the Championships in Ukraine and Poland next year.

The match will take place on Friday, October 7.
