Fabio Capello is believed to have blamed himself for not substituting Wayne Rooney before he was issued the red card against Montenegro.

Fabio Capello's personal plea to UEFA is believed to be the reason behind the governing body's decision to reduce Wayne Rooney's Euro 2012 three-match ban down to two games.

The 26-year-old is now eligible to play in England's final Group D clash against co-hosts Ukraine in next year's championships, despite initially being prohibited to feature in the group phase entirely.

While the Manchester United star gave his own statement to the UEFA board in Nyon yesterday, Capello told the hearing that he accepted full responsibility for failing to substitute the striker before the red card offence, according to The Express.

The UEFA officials suspended Rooney's third match ban for four years.
