Gary Lineker expects Manchester United to fail in Champions League campaign

Gary Lineker plays down Manchester United's chances of winning the Champions League this season.

Former England international Gary Lineker has claimed that Manchester United supporters are unlikely to be celebrating a Champions League triumph this season.

Manager Louis van Gaal guided the Red Devils back to the elite European competition last season following a year-long absence.

Despite the North-West outfit spending close to £300m on players in the past 14 months, Lineker does not expect the club to be crowned champions of Europe.

According to The Mirror, when asked about Wayne Rooney's chances of grabbing a second Champions League winners' medal, Lineker said: "Not great, I wouldn't have thought! Manchester United are in a big transition period. I think their fans might have to be patient for a while."

United will be without Rooney for tonight's Group B match against PSV Eindhoven due to a hamstring injury.
