Former Manchester City goalkeeping legend Bert Trautmann dies, aged 89.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann has died at the age of 89, the German Football Federation has confirmed.

Trautmann had previously suffered two heart attacks this year and passed away on Friday morning following a third.

The German, who was a prisoner of war, arrived at Manchester City in 1949 and went on to play more than 500 times for the club during a 15-year spell.

Perhaps the most memorable match of his illustrious career was in an FA Cup final in 1956 when he suffered a broken neck only to carry on and help City to a 3-1 win.

"Bert Trautmann was a great athlete and a true gentleman," said DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach. "He came as a soldier and thus an enemy to England but became a celebrated hero on the island.

"He was already a living legend. His extraordinary career will forever remain in the history books."

After his time at City Trautmann ended his career at Wellington Town, where he made two appearances.
