Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini unhappy with Raheem Sterling goal record

Manuel Pellegrini demands that Manchester City ace Raheem Sterling beat his previous best of 11 goals for the Sky Blues in the 2015-16 season.

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has demanded that £49m man Raheem Sterling register a personal-best season in the goalscoring stakes.

The 20-year-old winger has netted six times in all competitions so far for the Citizens - including a hat-trick in last month's 5-1 win over Bournemouth - but Pellegrini wants more.

His previous best at Liverpool was 11, and the Chilean says that failing to exceed those figures would be unacceptable given Sterling's star-studded supporting cast at Eastlands.

"Raheem is a young player and I was sure from the beginning that he must improve a lot," Pellegrini told a press conference. "I knew he scored 11 for Liverpool and I don't think that's a huge amount for Raheem. He must score more and to do that he must work a lot.

"He soon settled into our style of play and I'm happy that he has six already. When you are 21 years old and you work as a good professional, you must improve.

"Playing every day with important players is good for a young player, you are always learning from experienced players. The style we play is good for him. He will have good chances to score."

The Sky Blues, who sit top of the Premier League table, level on points with Arsenal, face Aston Villa away on Sunday.
