Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted that he is solely focused on winning trophies this season rather than breaking records.

City have been in scintillating form so far this term, with their tally of 78 points being the most ever amassed by a club after 29 games of an English top-flight season.

The Premier League points record is currently held by Chelsea, who accrued 95 in 2004-05, but with nine matches still remaining City are on course to become the first club to break the 100-point barrier.

"What really matters is to be champions. I never spoke with the players about the records, we are not going to play for the records. We are going to play good to win games," Guardiola told reporters at his post-match press conference.

"Records are a consequence of what you have done but they are not the main thing. If you think about records you forget what you have to do."

When asked whether he foresaw such an impressive campaign, Guardiola added: "Before? No way. Who could believe it? I think if you ask the players, the players neither."

City, who are now only four wins away from securing the Premier League title, are back in domestic action next Monday when they take on Stoke City.
