Victorious Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that he never doubted his choice to stick with Willy Caballero as his goalkeeper for the League Cup after the Argentine starred in this evening's penalty-shootout victory over Liverpool at Wembley.
Caballero has played ahead of City number one Joe Hart in the competition this season, and Pellegrini said after watching his side win the Cup that he would rather "lose a title" than go back on his word.
Caballero went on to save three penalties in a row as City came out on top 3-1 in the shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
"I prefer to lose a title than to lose my word, so Willy Caballero played tonight," Pellegrini told Sky Sports News.
"I know some media were ready to criticise me if Willy made a mistake but I trust him so I am very happy to win the title for the players, the club, the fans and staff and for Willy, because he deserves it."
Pellegrini, who is leaving to be replaced by current Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola at the end of the season, has now won the League Cup twice with City since his arrival in summer 2013.
