Wigan Athletic stun Manchester City in FA Cup quarter-final

Wigan Athletic get the better of Manchester City for the second year running in the FA Cup, defeating the Blues 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in today's quarter-final.

Defending champions Wigan Athletic have got the better of Manchester City for the second year running in the FA Cup, defeating Manuel Pellegrini's side 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in today's quarter-final.

Wigan's tactics were frustrating City early on but the visitors almost gifted them the opener when Ivan Ramis diverted Jesus Navas's cross just past him own post.

The Latics then took a shock lead in the 27th minute when Jordi Gomez coolly tucked home from the penalty spot after Martin Demichelis had brought down Marc-Antoine Fortune in the box.

Wigan held their lead into the break and then doubled it just moments after half time.

Callum McManaman fired over a low cross to the back post where James Perch arrived to poke home past Costel Pantilimon.

Fifteen minutes passed before City came close to levelling when Edin Dzeko's header came back off the post with Scott Carson beaten.

Minutes later the Wigan defence was breached when the Latics could only clear a corner to Samir Nasri, who fizzed a low shot into the net.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Dzeko spurned a good chance to equalise when he spooned over from close range while under pressure from Emmerson Boyce.

Although City threw everything at Wigan in the closing stages, the Latics managed to emulate last year's final heroics to set up another trip to Wembley where they will face Arsenal in the semi-final.
