How Manchester City could line up against Marseille

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for their Champions League showdown with Marseille on Tuesday evening.

Manchester City resume their Champions League campaign on Tuesday when they make the short journey to France to take on Marseille at the Orange Velodrome.

Pep Guardiola's men kicked off their European venture in perfect fashion with a 3-1 triumph over Porto in the opening round of fixtures, with Sergio Aguero, Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres all helping themselves to goals at the Etihad.

However, the Citizens will not be going into this game on the back of a win as Guardiola's side were held by West Ham United in Saturday's Premier League fixture, with Phil Foden coming off the bench to cancel out Michail Antonio's acrobatic opener at the London Stadium.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how City could line up for Tuesday's showdown with Marseille.

Guardiola has been plagued by injuries in the early stages of the 2020-21 season and the problems keep piling up for the distinguished Spaniard, with Sergio Aguero returning to the treatment room no sooner after making his return to action from another lengthy layoff.

The Argentine lasted all of 45 minutes against West Ham before being forced off with a hamstring problem, and the prolific forward has not made the journey to France for the midweek showdown with Marseille.

With Gabriel Jesus also sidelined, Raheem Sterling could start as a false nine at the Orange Velodrome, while Foden is expected to come back into the fold following his equaliser against West Ham - potentially on the left if Sterling is indeed shifted to a central role.

Guardiola raised eyebrows when he left Ferran Torres on the bench at the London Stadium, but having scored his first goal for the club against Porto last week, the young Spaniard could replace Riyad Mahrez here.

Kevin De Bruyne made his return to action as a substitute and is sure to come back into the first XI here alongside Gundogan and Rodri, but Guardiola's defensive dilemmas are well and truly alive with a plethora of players nursing injuries.

Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho are expected to remain out until after the international break, while Aymeric Laporte is doubtful and Nathan Ake is still on the treatment table.

Joao Cancelo has taken to the left-back role naturally in the absences of Ake and Mendy, but Oleksandr Zinchenko has now recovered from an injury of his own and is in line to start against Marseille.
