Jean-Michel Aulas: 'Lyon will return in 2016'

Jean-Michel Aulas says that Lyon can be the top side in French football once they have moved into their new stadium in 2016.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has warned the rest of Ligue 1 that his club will be a force to be reckoned with once more in 2016.

Les Gones have endured a disappointing start to the season, sitting 14th in the table having gone through a summer where transfer funds were sacrificed in order to fund a new stadium and the club have suffered significant injury problems.

With their new home scheduled for opening in three years' time, Aulas insists that Lyon can become a threat at the top of the league again which will be helped by the introduction of UEFA's Financial Fair Play from next term.

"OL is at the end of the French economic model's predominance", Aulas told France Football. "Soon, we will fight on equal terms with Monaco and PSG and other European clubs, who will have to adapt to the new rules laid down by UEFA.

"By 2016, the goal is to be in the top three in the championship in a stabilised manner, through fair play. This season, we have invested as much money in Lyon as Monaco and PSG have done in theirs. They have invested in players, while we have done so for the stadium.

"It is a choice. We'll see you in five years. The results, at the time, are not significant to our ambition for the season finale. We want to qualify for the Champions League."

Lyon host Bordeaux on Sunday.
