Liverpool enter the draw for the fourth round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 win at Brighton.

Liverpool have progressed through to the fourth round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 win at Brighton.

In an open first half, Liverpool went ahead when Craig Bellamy hit a low left-footed drive into the corner of the hosts' net.

Bellamy went close again before the break when his free kick thundered off the crossbar, but the Seagulls managed to hang on.

The home side were much more dominant in the second half, and Craig Noone almost equalised for the hosts when his drive hit the crossbar.

The visitors introduced Steven Gerrard with 15 minutes to play - his first appearance since March - and doubled their lead soon after when Dirk Kuyt fired in low off the post.

Gus Poyet's side were given hope in the dying minutes when Ashley Barnes fired in from the penalty spot after Rodriguez Vicente was felled in the area by Jamie Carragher, but they were unable to find an equaliser against the Premier League side.
