Jurgen Klopp admits that Liverpool 'could have controlled the match better' against Newcastle United and says that there is still room for improvement.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described his side's 2-0 win over Newcastle United as a "fantastic result" after consolidating their place in the Premier League's top four.

The Reds kept their impressive run of form going with a convincing victory at Anfield, secured through goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino either side of half time.

Klopp felt that his side should have won by a bigger margin, though, having had a strong penalty appeal turned down in stoppage time, and believes that there are still certain aspects to improve on if Liverpool are to hold on to second.

"I very often forget the result during the game so even though we were 2-0 up and I did feel we have to control the game better," he told BBC Sport. "But then when you step out on the pitch, you realise the wind, so it was difficult to do the right thing in the right moment.

"We could've controlled it better but I'm happy with the rest of the game. We scored two wonderful goals and for sure should have had a penalty but didn't. It's my job to keep my players awake and alive; if I see good moments then I don't have to get up and shout but in the not so good moments I do.

"They defended really well and are a good team with quality. We lost a few balls we don't usually lose and Roberto Firmino didn't have much support. It caused a few problems but not too many. We have to score in the right moments and keep a clean sheet and that's what we did so 2-0 is a fantastic result."

Liverpool are now unbeaten in 22 successive home league games against Newcastle, last losing to them at Anfield in April 1994.
