Roy Hodgson: 'I have great respect for Raheem Sterling'

Roy Hodgson says that he has "great respect" for Raheem Sterling, and believes that the Liverpool midfielder will achieve wonderful things for his country.

England manager Roy Hodgson has reiterated that his relationship with Raheem Sterling remains "very good".

The 19-year-old Liverpool midfielder was rested from the Three Lions' starting lineup for last month's Euro 2016 qualifying victory against Estonia having complained of feeling fatigued.

It led to a reported fallout between Hodgson and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers over how the matter should have been handled, although Sterling has been included in the latest England squad, with Hodgson insisting that the matter is now in the past.

"I speak to Raheem all the time and as far as I'm concerned that chapter is over," he told reporters. "I have nothing to say or add to that.

"Our relationship is a very good one and I don't think there is much to say when you are asked about why a player wasn't picked and you tell the truth.

"It's a chapter that is a month old and as far as I'm concerned is I am focused on the future. I have great respect for Raheem and agree with Steven Gerrard that he will do wonderful things for England."

Sterling has made 15 appearances for Liverpool this season in all competitions.
