Dietmar Hamann: 'Liverpool fans will not put up with mediocrity for much longer'

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann says that the fans will get fed up of the club's "mediocrity" if Jurgen Klopp does not win silverware at Anfield.

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has questioned Jurgen Klopp's future at Anfield by claiming that the fans will not "put up with mediocrity for much longer".

During his two-and-a-half-year spell at Liverpool, the German coach has guided the team to two cup finals, but lost both.

This season, the Reds failed to progress in the EFL Cup and are already out of the FA Cup, with just the Champions League and Premier League remaining.

However, realistically the Merseyside outfit are unlikely to take the crown in either of those, which would mean that Klopp's second full season in charge will end without silverware.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, Hamann said: "I don't think the fans will put up with mediocrity for an awful lot longer. In his tenure there have been two cup finals lost, a semi-final lost against Southampton over two legs, and Liverpool is about winning.

"I'm not sure what the owners want and what their targets are, whether being in the Champions League is good enough for them. All I know is that for the fans it isn't, and I think the club has to be very careful how long the fans will put up with it after the defeats they've had recently."

Ahead of Sunday's showdown against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, Liverpool sit third in the league table, three points adrift of second-placed Manchester United.
