Jamie Carragher: 'Jurgen Klopp appointment statement of intent'

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool's appointment of Jurgen Klopp is a "real statement" from the club due to the German's reputation in the game.

Jamie Carragher has claimed that the appointment of Jurgen Klopp is a statement of intent by Liverpool.

The 48-year-old was confirmed as Brendan Rodgers's successor at Anfield when he penned a three-year contract with the Merseysiders.

Carragher believes that the club's acquisition of Klopp is a major coup given their past history of appointing managers and the German's reputation in the game.

He wrote in the Daily Mail: "This is a real statement from the club. Two of Liverpool's previous three managers came from Fulham (Roy Hodgson) and Swansea (Rodgers) while the other - Kenny Dalglish - hadn't been in management for a long time.

"In the last five or six years there was a fear that Liverpool could not attract the absolute top players and managers, but if Barcelona or Manchester United had been looking for a new boss last summer Klopp would have been in the reckoning, so Liverpool have done very well to get him."

Klopp begins his reign at Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday.
