Prime Minister David Cameron describes the contents of the Hillsborough files as "deeply distressing".

Prime Minister David Cameron has been discussing the release of the Hillsborough files in the House of Commons this afternoon.

In a speech made to the House, Cameron described the contents of the files as "deeply distressing", while also expressing his sympathy towards the families of the 96 people that lost their lives 23 years ago.

"I have only had a very limited amount of time so far but it is already very clear that many of the report findings are deeply distressing. There are three in particular," said Cameron. "The failure of the authorities to help protect people, the attempts to blame the fans and the doubt cast on the original coroner's inquest.

"What happened then and since was wrong. It was wrong that the families have had to wait so long and fight so hard just to get the truth. It is right for me as Prime Minister to make a proper apology.

"The Liverpool fans were not to blame for the disaster."

There will be a press conference at Liverpool Cathedral, where the files have been released, shortly.
