Frequently crossing paths during the second half of the 20th century, firstly in the Second Division before becoming First Division mainstays, Liverpool and Ipswich Town have met on 74 occasions down the years, and the Merseyside giants often held the bragging rights.

Indeed, Liverpool have 39 victories compared to just 14 for Ipswich, including in their opening battle of the 2024-25 Premier League season, which saw both Arne Slot and Kieran McKenna take charge of a top-flight game for the first time in England.

Despite some positive passages of play from Ipswich in the first half, they failed to make the most of their openings and succumbed to strikes from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah, the latter scoring a record ninth Premier League opening-weekend goal.

Later that season, Liverpool roared to a much more emphatic 4-1 home success on another landmark day for Salah, who overtook Thierry Henry in the Premier League's goalscoring charts with his 100th top-flight goal at Anfield.

There have also been 21 draws between the two competitors, 22 if you count a 1-1 stalemate during their most recent non-league showdown in the fourth round of the 2002-03 League Cup.

However, Liverpool held their nerve from 12 yards to progress from the penalty spot on that day, which came after the Reds tore Ipswich to shreds during the 2001-02 top-flight campaign, scoring 11 goals in those two contests.

A 5-0 demolition at Anfield succeeded a 6-0 battering in February 2002, a day when Michael Owen and Emile Heskey both notched braces for themselves.

The 2-0 success in August 2024 stretched Liverpool's unbeaten run at Portman Road to seven matches, with the Reds' last defeat on Ipswich's turf coming back in the 1985-86 Division One campaign, although they suffer shock losses at Anfield in 1995 and 2000.

However, with four wins and two draws to show from six Premier League contests at Portman Road, Liverpool have played more times at Ipswich's headquarters without losing than they have against any other top-flight side since 1992.

The individual goalscoring charts are unsurprisingly dominated by the Reds too, as Ian Rush leads the way with 13 goals against Ipswich, while Sir Kenny Dalglish struck 10 of his own.

Kevin Keegan (eight) and Roger Hunt (six) also terrorised the Ipswich backline during their time with Liverpool, although ex-Ipswich man Trevor Whymark netted six of his own against the Merseyside titans.
