Leicester City cruise past Charlton Athletic

Leicester City earn a comfortable 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic in the Championship this afternoon.

Leicester City have furthered their ambitions for Premier League football next season with a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Charlton Athletic in the Championship.

The hosts took the lead after only nine minutes when David Nugent played in Jamie Vardy down the right channel of the box, leaving the striker to drill the ball home into the bottom corner of the Charlton goal.

Leicester looked in command in the early stages of the game, with Daniel Drinkwater pulling the strings from midfield. The former Manchester United midfielder appeared to have set Vardy on his way, but the linesman flagged for offside with the striker through on goal.

City could have made it 2-0 when Riyad Mahrez whipped in an inch-perfect delivery for Nugent, but the striker sent his header over the crossbar.

Vardy also missed a chance to double his tally late on in the half when he headed wide following a cross from Matthew James, leaving City to go into the break 1-0 ahead.

The hosts came out of the traps quicker in the second half, with Drinkwater making it 2-0 with a well-taken effort that saw the ball nestle into the top corner in the 48th minute.

Charlton nearly pulled one back, but Richard Wood headed just over the bar, having been picked out by Astrit Ajdarevic's pass into the box.

City wrapped up the three points with over 20 minutes still to play, this time as Vardy turned provider to put in Nugent, who made no mistake by tucking the ball into the bottom corner with precision.
