Ipswich Town, Cardiff City in stalemate at Portman Road

Ipswich Town and Cardiff City play out a scoreless draw at Portman Road, meaning both sides drop down one place in the Championship table.

Ipswich Town and Cardiff City have played out a goalless draw in their Championship tie at Portman Road.

City keeper David Marshall denied Mick McCarthy's side twice in the opening half, his first save a finger-tip stop that directed Daryl Murphy's 16th-minute header onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

Freddie Sears sent in a cross midway through the half that struck Bluebirds centre-half Sean Morrison before speeding towards goal, but Marshall managed to make the point-blank save and keep the scores level after 45 minutes.

Ipswich keeper Dean Gerken then kept his side on level terms with a 57th-minute save from Sammy Ameobi's volley.

Murphy then latched onto another cross, supplied by Town captain Luke Chambers, but directed his header onto the roof of the net.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles found himself on the end of a Tractor Boys attack but volleyed over from close range.

Craig Noone, introduced in the 75th minute for the on-loan Newcastle man Ameobi, immediately had the opportunity to break the deadlock as he found himself unmarked at the back post.

The winger was unable to direct his header on target, however, before Aron Gunnarsson fired over from close range as both sides failed to find the back of the net.

The two teams drop down one place in the table due to the scoreless draw, as Cardiff move down to ninth while Ipswich now sit in 14th.
