Preview: Getafe vs. Girona - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's La Liga clash between Getafe and Girona, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Title-challenging Girona will be bidding to make it back-to-back wins in Spain's top flight when they continue their campaign away to Getafe on Saturday evening.

The visitors are currently second in the La Liga table, seven points behind division leaders Real Madrid, while Getafe occupy 12th spot, eight points off sixth-placed Real Sociedad.

Getafe are currently on a four-game winless run in Spain's top flight, with their last victory proving to be a 3-2 success over Celta Vigo on February 11. Since then, the capital outfit have picked up just two points, drawing with Villarreal and Las Palmas, in addition to losing to Barcelona and Valencia.

The Deep Blue Ones have dropped down to 12th position in the table, boasting a record of eight wins, 11 draws and nine defeats, which has seen them collect 35 points.

Getafe are now eight points off sixth position, which is a European spot for next season, but they are only one point behind 10th-placed Osasuna and will certainly have their eyes on a top-half finish.

Jose Bordalas's side have been strong at home this season, picking up 25 points from 13 matches, recording seven wins in the process, but they will be welcoming a Girona outfit with the third-best away record in La Liga this season, claiming 27 points from 14 games.

Getafe recorded a 3-2 victory when these two sides locked horns in the corresponding match last season, but Girona were 3-0 winners in the reverse fixture earlier this term.

Girona, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a 2-0 home success over Osasuna, with Portu and Savio on the scoresheet for the Catalan outfit, who remain second in the table.

Michel's side have had a recent wobble, losing three of their last five in Spain's top flight, with the defeats coming on the road to Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Mallorca.

Girona remain in the title picture, collecting 62 points from 28 matches, which has left them seven points behind leaders Real Madrid and one clear of third-placed Barcelona.

The White and Reds are also nine points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao in the race to secure Champions League action for next season, which would go down as a remarkable campaign for the club.

Girona have finished 10th, 18th and 10th in their previous three seasons at this level, and their form in 2023-24 has been one of the stories of the campaign.

The Catalan side have actually lost on their last two visits to Getafe at this level of football, and it is shaping up to be a fascinating contest at Estadi Montilivi this weekend.

Team News

Getafe will be without the services of three first-team players for this weekend's contest, with Omar Alderete, Borja Mayoral and Mauro Arambarri on the sidelines through injury.

However, the hosts will be boosted by the return of on-loan Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who was suspended for the 1-0 loss to Valencia last time out.

Greenwood could be set for a role through the middle on Saturday due to Mayoral's absence, while Diego Rico is expected to be the player to benefit from Alderete's injury, which he suffered in the second half against Los Che.

As for Girona, Borja Garcia, Viktor Tsyhankov, Yangel Herrera, Ricard Artero, Joel Roca and Toni Villa will be missing for the visitors through injury.

Tsyhankov suffered a knee injury in the second half of the clash with Osasuna last time out, and he is now expected to be replaced by Yan Couto.

Portu was on the scoresheet in the team's 2-0 success on home soil and is expected to retain his spot in a wide area, while Savio will play on the opposite side, with the pair supporting centre-forward Artem Dovbyk, who has netted 14 times in Spain's top flight during the 2023-24 campaign.

Getafe possible starting lineup:
Soria; Iglesias, Dakonam, Rico, Alvarez; Alena, Milla, Moriba, Mata; Greenwood, Latasa

Girona possible starting lineup:
Gazzaniga; E Garcia, D Lopez, Blind; Couto, A Garcia, Martin, Gutierrez; Portu, Dovbyk, Savio

We say: Getafe 2-2 Girona

This is a really tough match to call; Getafe have been strong at home this season, losing just twice, while Girona have been impressive on their travels but have lost their last three. It would not be a surprise to see a home or indeed an away win, but we have had to settle on a share of the spoils here.
