Germany ease into Confederations Cup final with comfortable win over Mexico

Goals from Leon Goretzka, Timo Werner and Amin Younes earn Germany a Confederations Cup final tie against Chile following a 4-1 semi-final win over Mexico in Sochi.

Goals from Leon Goretzka, Timo Werner and Amin Younes ensured that Germany booked their place in the Confederations Cup final against Chile after beating Mexico 4-1 at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi this evening.

Germany started the contest in typically efficient fashion and they found themselves in front after just six minutes, Benjamin Henrichs breaking away to square a neat ball across the edge of the area to find Goretzka, who made no mistake with a clinical finish beyond Guillermo Ochoa.

Die Mannschaft soon found themselves with a two-goal advantage, this time as Mexico fell asleep at the back in order to allow Werner to find space and produce a pin-point pass for the run of Goretzka, the striker notching another adroit finish to claim his second of the night.

After a strong start, Germany sat off possession allowing Mexico to grow into the contest, and they might have found a route back into the game when Giovani dos Santos broke beyond the last man, but he was denied down low by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Dos Santos proved to be a nuisance during the first period and he was central to Mexico's next chance after he fed the run of Javier Hernandez, who almost lobbed the German stopper only to see his effort rise over the crossbar from close range.

Mexico's adventurousness continued after the break and they spurned another standout chance to pull one back when Hernandez caught Joshua Kimmich sleeping, although Raul Jimenez could not beat Ter Stegen who stood tall.

Hopes of a Mexico revival were short-lived, however, as Julian Draxler soon orchestrated an almost-perfect team goal for Germany minutes later, feeding Jonas Hector with a neat through-ball before Werner provided the finish into an empty net.

Juan Carlos Osorio's side did earn a consolation goal nearing the end of proceedings, though, as Marco Fabian produced a standout free kick from range that left Ter Stegen rooted to the spot.

Germany replied in predictable fashion, however, leaving substitute Younes to notch a fourth just a few moments later after collecting Emre Can's lay-off.
