Match Analysis: West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Fulham

Sports Mole takes a closer look at the 1-1 draw played out between West Bromwich Albion and Fulham in the Premier League.

Felix Magath started his reign as Fulham manager with a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Fulham dominated for long periods of the first half and took the lead thanks to a fine low effort from Ashkan Dejagah.

The visitors were denied a victory at The Hawthorns when Maarten Stekelenburg's mistake allowed Matej Vydra to score an 86th minute equaliser.

Below, Sports Mole takes a look at the key talking points from the Premier League game.

Was the result fair?

Quite simply, yes it was a fair result. Fulham were by far the better side in the first half and fully deserved to lead at the break, but West Brom hit back in the second half to pile the pressure on the visitors. It looked like Fulham would hold on for the win, but the Baggies finally found a way through to earn a deserved point.

West Brom's performance

Manager Pepe Mel would have been very concerned with the lack of threat posed by his side before the half-time interval. West Brom looked to be lacking a creative influence for long periods, but the introduction of Victor Anichebe did enable them to hold the ball up in advanced areas of the pitch. A much improved display brought the home fans into the game and Mel will be delighted with how his side responded.

Fulham's performance

For 50 minutes of the match, Fulham were absolutely outstanding. They didn't look like a side who deserved to be bottom of the table and impressed with their quick attacks throughout the first half. It looked like it would be a dream start, but the visitors failed to hold their nerve for long enough to walk away with a victory.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Lewis Holtby: A West Brom fightback may have meant that one of their players collected this award but it was Holtby's display that stood out this afternoon. The German, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, was a constant threat for Fulham with his accurate passing and ability to find space in dangerous areas. A very impressive display.

Biggest gaffe

It's no contest today. Maarten Stekelenburg takes this honour today for his howler that led to West Brom's equaliser. Matej Vydra's low strike should have been easily saved, but he allowed the ball to slip under his body and creep over the line.

Referee performance

Mike Dean was forced to show six yellow cards but he couldn't have been accused of having a bad day at the office. It was a pretty routine day for the man in the middle.

What next?

West Brom: The Baggies won't be in action next weekend, so their next fixture will come against Manchester United on March 8.

Fulham: Magath will be looking to follow up this promising display by claiming a result against local rivals Chelsea next Saturday.
