Fiorentina back into fourth with win over Genoa

Fiorentina moved back into fourth in the Serie A table courtesy of a 3-1 win over Chievo this evening.

The hosts made a perfect start to the match when they took the lead after just 11 minutes, Juan Cuadrado volleying David Pizarro's cross into the bottom left corner.

Chievo almost levelled things up with 10 minutes to go until half time as Alberto Paloschi latched on to a cross, but his effort from close range was straight at Neto.

Fiorentina took full advantage of that let-off, doubling their lead just five minutes later as Cuadrado picked out Alessandro Matri, who had the simple task of finishing at the back post.

The visitors had a decent opportunity to pull a goal back shortly before the hour mark when Ivan Radovanovic found himself in a good position, but his subsequent effort flew high over the bar.

They did finally register on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute as Luca Rigoni's pass found Paloschi, who slid his effort in to make it 2-1.

Fiorentina came close to restoring their two-goal advantage with 15 minutes of the match remaining as Juan Vargas unleashed a powerful effort that flashed narrowly past the post.

The hosts should have made it 3-1 with nine minutes of normal time remaining after Matteo Rubin was adjudged to have handled inside the box. Pizarro stepped up to take the subsequent spot kick, but Michael Agazzi flung himself down to make the save.

Chievo almost found an equaliser in the 86th minute when Sergio Pellissier received the ball inside the area, but he could not steer a shot on target, sending it just wide.

The points were secured for the hosts late on when Mario Gomez produced a composed finish to make it 3-1 in the 89th minute, handing his side three valuable points to send them back into the top four.
