Exeter City boss Paul Tisdale has suggested that Matt Oakley could make an immediate return to the club this summer.
The 35-year-old, who is currently out of contract, is due to depart the team when his deal officially comes to an end this month.
However, Tisdale has revealed that the experienced midfielder could return if the finances become available.
"We'll have to wait until the end of the month and see what the finances are like," Tisdale told BBC Sport.
"I'm hoping Matt will still be available for us and I'll talk to him then, but at the moment I can't commit to him so he's entitled to talk to anybody if he wishes.
"I can't stop it, I can't prevent it and if they wish to talk to someone else I wouldn't stop them either."
Oakley is understood to be attracting a number of League Two clubs.
