Edin Dzeko double sends Manchester City to top of Premier League

Manchester City top the Premier League table courtesy of a narrow 3-2 victory against Everton at Goodison Park.

Manchester City have climbed to the top of the Premier League table having come from behind to beat Everton 3-2 at Goodison Park.

City fell a goal down early on, but strikes from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero ensured that they overtook Liverpool at the summit.

The home side had the better of the early exchanges, and their dominance was rewarded on 10 minutes when Ross Barkley curled a shot beyond the reach of Joe Hart from outside the box.

City responded well to the setback and almost levelled soon after through Yaya Toure, who fired agonisingly over the bar after holding off Leon Osman's challenge.

Aguero did eventually pull the Citizens level after 22 minutes when he accelerated away from Antolin Alcaraz, before firing past Tim Howard at the near post.

Manuel Pellegrini's charges completed the first-half comeback two minutes before the interval through Dzeko, with the Bosnian heading past Howard to make it 2-1.

Everton went in search of a second goal straight from the off following the restart, with Steven Naismith being played through by Barkley, but his effort from close range was tipped around the post by Hart.

Just one minute later Dzeko added his second goal of the game for City, as he prodded the ball home following Samir Nasri's drilled cross into the box.

It was game on again soon after, however, when on 64 minutes Romelu Lukaku headed Leighton Baines's cross past Hart to make it 3-2.

Everton had one final chance to level the contest late on after Gerard Delofeu jinked his way through the opposition defence, but his effort was pushed wide by Hart with City holding out for the three points.

As well as sending Man City top, the result also confirms a top-four finish for Arsenal with Everton now unable to catch the Gunners.
